Elements of Leadership
Do not follow where the path may lead. Go instead where there is no path and leave a trail. - Ralph Waldo Emerson
Today we had an exciting workshop at UCM's Faculty of Economics conducted by María Hidalgo Múgica. We discussed the patterns that may emerge in certain types of leadership.
Types of leadership
In general...
Water | Fire | Earth | Air |
Adaptable and can adapt and adjust depending on the situation. | Ignition or "fire starters" in an organization | Grounded and focus on executing tasks. | Big thinkers, they see endless possibilities (Creatives) |
Concept of leadership
To resume the concept, everyone has a proclivity to fall into 1 (or more) of these definitions. It is easy to assume that we can infer someone's personality by the kind ( or type) of leadership he/she enforces. How much power do we need to effectively manage a team? Because, after all, the concepts of power and leadership are closely linked. The basic definition of power is the possession of control, authority, or influence over others. What leader does not hold the capacity to influence others? Not a good one, for sure. The role of power in leadership is crucial for the effective management of teams and societies as a whole.
Leverage
These are some of the bases of power that leaders may leverage:
- Position
- Charisma
- Relationships
- Information
- Expertise
- Punishment
- Reward
What is Resonant Leadership?
Resonant leadership is an idea coined by Daniel Goleman. Resonant leaders work on emotional intelligence to direct their feelings to help a group meet its goals.
Styles of Resonant Leadership
Visionary | Coaching | Affiliative | Democratic |
Sees the organization's overall picture and share it with their employees | Focuses on the personal development of employees | Builds relationships and working together | Depends on the team's knowledge to provide feedback or cooperate in the decision-making process |
